Chapter Five

For weeks, Arthur went to events with Teddy, let other dragons sniff him and smile knowingly, and wondered whether he’d made the right choice. On the one hand, permanent job security was a good prospect, and probably worth nine months of discomfort and people leering at him. On the other hand, he had no idea what he’d be expected to do once he’d had the baby. He was tempted to imagine that the baby would be raised mostly by a nanny, but he knew Teddy better than that. Under his protective hide was a man who valued family so highly that the loss of a member of it had nearly killed him. He’d want to be as hands-on as possible.

Maybe Teddy wouldn’t need him once he had a baby. Maybe he’d buy Arthur off for the kind of money he couldn’t refuse and have him disappear so he could have his own little family again.

It was a possibility Arthur would have to come to terms with. Teddy was still nervous around him since they’d slept together, and though he could play the part of doting partner in public, they rarely spoke when they were alone.

Arthur knew that would improve with time, but it still upset him in a way he’d never expected to be upset. He thought at first it was because he was used to being the centre of his clients’ attention, but this was different. He felt as though he’d become a vessel for Teddy’s baby, which was why he’d never considered surrogate work before. He wasn’t psychologically cut out for it, and he’d always known that about himself.

As much as Teddy needed family, Arthur needed affection. He wasn’t sure that he should have committed to perhaps a lifetime without it.

He was pondering this dilemma when an ex-client approached him at a breakfast event, while Teddy had wandered off elsewhere.

“Arthur. You’ve done well for yourself.” Jake smiled at him as he came to stand directly in front of Arthur, putting himself between Arthur and the rest of the room, since he’d been standing by a wall. “Does he know what you really are?”

Jake was one of the clients Arthur had been forced to stop seeing when he’d realised he was falling for him. Dragons were nothing if not possessive, and letting one feel like they had some claim on you was bad business for a sex worker. Jake wasn’t at all like Teddy, and though he’d been fun enough, Arthur had broken his heart.

He was clearly still upset about it.

“I don’t see how that’s any of your business,” Arthur said carefully. “And I’d prefer you left me alone.”

“We don’t always get what we want.” Jake looked him up and down. “You’re pregnant, too. Nearly four months.”

That was already common knowledge, so Arthur wasn’t surprised Jake knew. “Very observant,” Arthur said, perhaps a little more mockingly than he would normally have. Jake made him uneasy, and he was bristling in response. “Still none of your business.”

“It is if I make it my business.
